I had an oil leak on my '97. What I found it was a rubber plug in the cylinder head cover above one of the front head bolts. If you look at the front of your bike, by the exhaust pipe, you can kinda see into the region between the head and head cover. In there you can see the top of a head bolt (it is actually a nut on a stud). Right above there is a rubber plug. I found that to be the source of the problem due to factory install with no sealant. A little permatex later, problem solved; after a couple hours of disassembly and re-assembly.
